DinoFest Lancaster & Sir Richard Owen: A Roarsome Celebration

The Dinofest Lancaster event brings prehistoric adventure to life for families of all ages. Featuring life-size dinosaur exhibits, hands-on activities, and interactive learning, Dinofest offers a fun and educational experience in the heart of Lancaster. Perfect for children, dinosaur enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the ancient world, this unique event promises a day full of discovery and excitement.

Each summer, Lancaster’s city centre comes alive with the sounds of roaring dinosaurs, excited families, and curious young palaeontologists. DinoFest, a free two-day festival, brings prehistoric creatures to life right here in the heart of Lancaster.

But DinoFest isn’t just about fun—it’s a proud celebration of Sir Richard Owen, the Lancastrian who coined the word “dinosaur” in 1842.


What to Expect at DinoFest

    Spot the businesses which have dinosaurs painted on their windows.

  • Meet the Dinosaurs

T-Rex to baby raptors and mischievous Ankylosaurs, costumed walkabout dinosaurs appear throughout the weekend in Market Square, Dalton Square, and nearby streets.

  • Hands-On Activities
    Enjoy fossil-handling, puppet-making, story sessions, face painting, and craft workshops—many perfect for kids.

  • Dinosaur Marketplace
    Browse dino-themed stalls, fossil displays, and street food vendors from across Lancashire.

Honouring Sir Richard Owen

Did you know Lancaster played a part in dinosaur history?

Born in 1804 on Brock Street, Sir Richard Owen trained as a medical apprentice here before becoming one of Britain’s most important scientists. He:

  • Coined the word “dinosaur”

  • Founded the Natural History Museum in London

  • Studied the first major dinosaur fossils in England

During DinoFest, his legacy is celebrated with:

  • Educational workshops for schools

  • Talks and exhibitions linking Lancaster’s past with cutting-edge palaeontology
